PARIS, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The French police have arrested a man after his threat to attack police at Mont-Saint-Michel prompted an evacuation of the busy tourist site, local media reported on Monday.

The man, aged 36, was detained late Sunday on a motorway near the city of Caen in northwestern France, according to news channel BFMTV.

He "boasted of being behind the threats" to attack the security services and was placed into custody for public offences.

On Sunday morning, police evacuated the Mont-Saint-Michel after a man reportedly made menacing comments against police on a shuttle bus to the site.

France has become a major target of terrorist attacks following its military operations in Syria, Iraq and the Sahel region.

In October 2017, French President Emmanuel Macron signed an anti-terrorism law which he said was necessary to tackle high terrorism menace at home.

The law allows police more power to search, arrest without judical approval and put restrictions on people movements and gathering.
